Cairo Chamber of Commerce has announced the establishment of an observatory to follow up
the market state, especially in key sectors such as (food - meat - poultry - fish - Perfumery)
in preparation for the holy month of Ramadan to find out the availability of these commodities.
Eng. Ibrahim Al Araby -Cairo Chamber's chairman explained that through this observatory the follow-up
of all goods is on a daily basis by the relevant divisions and report on commodity prices and
the availability of supply will be prepared. The chamber announces the price index and the extent of
changing these prices and the reasons that lead to this.
He said that in the first monitoring of the market state this week, a report by the Division of foodstuffs
on the availability of all goods, especially basic stability of prices with uneven decline in the prices of
some products (such as frying oil, which dropped by between 5 to 6% and butter imported 5% and
cheddar Cheese 4 % in addition to the existence of offers on the corn oils up to 15% discount) and
there is a remarkable stability in the rest of the prices of goods.
The report of the grain Division confirmed that legumes prices are stable and the price of beans fell by
5% and kidney beans 20% and lentils price is stable and there is an increase in the supply which
confirming the stability in Ramadan.
He pointed out that imported meat according to importers of meat report at Cairo Chamber , there is
abundance in Meat due to importing the government amounts of meat, live and frozen and providing
the consumer cooperatives, which resulting in to oversupply and then stability of price . the sold kilo
of Brazilian meat at a price ranging between 36 and 38 pounds and is expected to fall during Ramadan
to 34 or 36 pounds, and the Indian from 32 and 33 to 32 and 33 pounds and for the popular front pieces
to 30 and 31.
While the report of meat Division indicates that there is a abundance of the municipal meat, which
makes things stable during the month of Ramadan and prices will remain as it was two months ago.
The kilo of Kunduze meat sold at a price ranging between 65 and 75 pounds.
The report also indicates that the fisheries sector is witnessing abundant supply that makes steadier
Prices, especially in the popular fish such as tilapia and mullet. Ramadan this year will come in line with
the production of fish farms, which begins in next July and August, which means there is no increase in
prices due to oversupply despite currently fishing season is stopped. The kilo of tilapia fish price is
varying between 13 and 15 pounds and mullet from 23 to 30 pounds and porgy fish from 10 to 15
pounds, while price of shrimps is from 40 to 150 pounds.
He said that the report of the poultry Division explained the availability of supply but it is expected to
increase in prices ranging from 10 to 15% during the first week of Ramadan due to increased demand
and the existing problems in some poultry farms and this increase is expected to continue until
September. the price of kilo of poultry from 12.5 to 15 pounds in farms While reach to consumers at
a price ranging from 22 to 23 pounds for frozen and 18 pounds for live.
Al Araby confirmed that the report of Spices Division indicated to an increase in prices of Nuts and
dried fruits ( yamish Ramadan) this year due to a shortage of supply rated 30% because of the high price
of the dollar , the Customs and taxes plus the price increase in origin countries .in addition to that there
is a decline this year in the quantities imported ranged between 75 and 80% because of the low
amounts of crops in origin countries
He pointed out that the report of vegetables and fruit Division emphasized on the availability of supply
with the decline in some prices either vegetables or fruits ranging kilogram of potatoes between 2.5
and 3 pounds and the price of tomatoes has stabilized between 1.75 and 2 pounds, peas between 6.5
pounds, beans between 1.75 and 2.5 pounds, zucchini between 2 and 2.5 pounds,spinach between 3
pounds and 3.5 pounds pepper municipal between 1.75 and 2 pounds per kilo. while the price of fruits
are stable, one kilo of bananas between 5 and 6 pounds, Wholesale luxurious grapes sold at a price of
2.75 pounds per kilo and in retail from 5 to 7 pounds.
