The Egyptian pound is the current basic unit of currency in Egypt, and is divided into 100 piasters and

issued by the Central Bank of Egypt.

The gold coin is considered  a mean of  dealing  until 1898 until  establishing  the National Bank of Egypt,

which  has given  the privilege of issuing convertible  banknotes  into gold by The Egyptian government

for 50 years, to be issued the first paper for cash valued one Egyptian pound on April 3, 1899.

In 08-02-1914 was issued a special decree on considering Egyptian banknotes as legal official currency

tool for Egypt and stopped converting into gold and the Egyptian Pound (paper) became the basic unit of

currency.

In 1960 Central Bank of Egypt has been granted the right to issue Egyptian banknotes and several changes have been made to the watermark and design of Papers and colors.
