Global tea prices increase by 16% in September, October

CAIRO – 2 December 2017: Prices of tea surged globally during September and October of 2017, the Federation of Egyptian Industries’ Food Industries Chamber said Saturday. 

According to a report that includes international prices of food commodities, global tea prices registered a hike to reach $3.25 in October and $3.21 in September. 

This represented a 16 percent rise compared to the same period last year. 
The international hike in tea prices naturally affects the domestic market in Egypt, the chamber said. 

Tea is the national drink in Egypt. It is packed and sold in the country is almost exclusively imported from Kenya and Sri Lanka. 

The Egyptian government considers tea a strategic crop and runs large tea plantations in Kenya.
