Egyptian technology company SICO officially launched the first locally-manufactured Egyptian smartphone with EGP 400 million investments nationwide on Sunday, state-run news agency MENA reported.

Locally-produced components in the mobile phone stand at 45 percent, Egyptian Silicons Industries Company (SICO) chairman Mohamed Salem said.

The smartphone is manufactured at the company's plant in New Assiut Park, a special economic zone for telecommunications and IT, Salem added.

The phone will be sold in African and Middle Eastern markets, as the company has offices in Kenya and the UAE.

The company said in January that locally-manufactured smartphone "Nile X" would be sold at EGP 4,200 retail.

SICO announced the launch of the Nile X at the 2017 Cairo Information and Communications Technology conference in December.

SICO and US-based Qualcomm signed an agreement in December 2017 to transfer communications technology to the Egyptian company's electronic devices manufacturing plant.

SICO Technology is the owner of the Egyptian Company for Silicon Products and was established in 2003 as a member of the El-Sayed Salem Group.
