10% Increase in Poultry Prices amid Increase in Mortality Rate

Poultry prices witnessed an increase of 10% during the past week in the local market, according to the assurances of the Poultry Division of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce to record about EGP 30 per kilo.

Abdulaziz El-Sayed, head of the division indicated  that poultry prices are recorded on Sunday around EGP 30 for retailers, and EGP 34-35 for the consumer, and urban poultry has stabilized to record EGP 39 at the farm and EGP 43 for the consumer.

El-Sayed attributed the rise in poultry prices to the high cost of production in light of the sharp drop in temperatures which caused higher mortality rate during this winter season.

The poultry sector in Egypt is one of the vital and important sectors for the national economy, which provides more than 2.5 million direct jobs.

The volume of investments of poultry farms operating in the Egyptian market is more than EGP 90 billion, and the number of breeders working in the sector ranges between 50 and 60 thousand establishments, including 20 large companies, according to the data of the Poultry Producers Association.

According to the statistics of the Chamber of Commerce the annual production is about 1.6 billion birds, which achieves self-sufficiency for citizens.

Egypt’s exports of poultry products, before exports stopped in 2006, amounted to about $6.8 million.

Poultry consumption

As for the consumption of individuals, a recent study by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) reported that the consumption of proteins by Egyptian families dropped by up to a quarter, during the coronavirus crisis.

The per capita share of poultry reaches 21.5 kilos of poultry annually.

The price of white and red eggs recorded a price from EGP 42 to 48 per carton, and municipal eggs between EGP 48 to 55 per carton.

The price of the white chick ranged between EGP 8 and 12 , the “Sasso” chick recorded between EGP 7 to 10, the urban chick at EGP 9, and the price of the brown chick reached EGP 70.
